Dan Citrin is a Senior Advisor with International Capital Strategies. Dan spent over 25 years in senior positions in four departments at the International Monetary Fund, including Chief of Staff and Head of the Office of the Managing Director, Director of the Office of Budget and Planning and Deputy Director of the Asia and Pacific Department. Dan’s experience includes both internal IMF experience, where Dan managed the Fund’s complex operations in both economic and strategic planning functions as well as specific regional experience on Japan and Asia, providing counsel to IMF management and senior officials of IMF member countries based on operational and research experience and having resided in Asia for over 20 years. Dan advised senior leadership of Japan’s Ministry of Finance on a range of issues related to Japan’s 2018-2019 G20 Presidency. He was also the head of the IMF’s Russia division from 1995-1998.
Dan led the IMF’s country operations for Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and a range of other countries in the Asia and Pacific region, as well as leading the Department’s work on a range of regional issues. Dan has extensive Graduate academic research experience on the Japanese economy while at University of Michigan. He is the recipient of the Japan Foundation dissertation research fellowship and was associated with the Japanese Government’s then Economic Planning Agency (now part of Cabinet Office). He has published extensively on Japan and served in various capacities as part of IMF Japan country teams, culminating in a four year tenure as Head of IMF’s Japan country team from 2004-2008. He was a resident of Japan for over 20 years, both as a child and in his professional life. He is fluent in Japanese.
